NATURE EDUCATION

Nature Education Through the Senses

Standard biology lessons leave a lot out, and children take it in differently once their hands are actually in the dirt. Much of what's taught here is about the species nobody notices, the bugs and the so-called 'unwanted' plants that most lesson plans skip past. Children meet that world through the senses rather than through facts: soil under their nails, a pigment ground from a plant, something tasted or made with their own hands. An insect once flinched at, or a plant walked past a hundred times, gets handled and turned into something and it sticks differently that way. They are part of the ecosystem, not on top of it. It's never only about what ends up on the plate; it's always about the whole, usually invisible, system behind it.
